wednesday 21 october 2026, 11am-6pm. the albany, deptford.

midscale is not a conference

Midscale touring needs more than good intentions. It needs people in the same room: venues, producers, artists, tour bookers and sector specialists who are ready to share what they know, test what might work, and build the relationships that get shows made and seen.

Midscale 2026 is a one-day working event for the people who make touring happen, and for those who want to be part of what comes next. This inaugural event will bring together productions that are touring, projects that are ready to tour, ideas looking for partners, and conversations that could lead to better ways of working.

This is not a conference to sit through. It is a day to take part in: to meet people, ask questions, offer insight, spot opportunities and help rebuild confidence, capacity and momentum in UK midscale touring.

The more you put in to this pilot event, the more you will get out.

Who is it for?

Midscale is for organisations and individuals working, or actively seeking to work, in UK midscale touring (generally venues between 300 and 800 seats). We are particularly prioritising work in:

  • Drama
  • Music theatre
  • Opera
  • Dance

We want a strong balance of venues and producers, alongside others who have a practical role to play in making midscale touring more viable, ambitious and connected.

Places are limited to 250 people. We expect demand to exceed capacity, so attendance will be by application.

There will be a maximum of two people per organisation.

How to apply

Please use one application form per organisation. You will be asked for the details of one or two named delegates.

To apply, please read all the details below and then complete this form. Deadline for applications is Friday 31 July.

We will use the application process to help create the right balance of venues, producers, artforms, geography and experience. We also want to make sure that everyone attending is actively engaged in, or seriously committed to, midscale touring.

Please use one application form per organisation. You will be asked for the details of one or two named delegates.

Applicants will be informed by Tuesday 11 August whether they have been allocated a place.

If a delegate can’t make it, the place can be transferred. New details must be supplied to the organisers by Friday 16 October. There are no further changes from his point and no refunds will be given.

What does it cost?

Tickets are just £50 for a single delegate or £150 for two delegates. That's not a typo. We're keen to be as accessible as possible to smaller companies, freelancers and independent producers.

Price includes lunch and a drinks voucher for the closing reception.

You will be invoiced in August. Payment must be made by 21 September 2026 or your place(s) will be withdrawn.

We are exploring funding opportunities for travel and accommodation bursaries for those travelling significant distances.

Access

The Albany is fully physically accessible, with step-free access throughout the building.

Speech-to-text captioning will be available in the three principal event spaces, helping make presentations and discussions more accessible for delegates who are deaf, hard of hearing, or who otherwise benefit from live captioning.

We'll ask about access and dietary requirements during the application process and will do everything we reasonably can to ensure delegates can participate fully in the event.

WAYS TO ENGAGE

Tour-ready Presentations

Five-minute opportunities to promote work that is touring or ready to tour in the next 12-24 months.

These sessions will mainly take place in The Albany’s Theatre, with a big screen and great sound.

This is your chance to share your digital assets, make the case for your production and connect directly with venues, programmers and potential partners.

Bring the work. Sell the production. Start the conversations.

Pipeline - Pitchers and Panellists

Designed for collaborative development of new ideas for future midscale touring (24 months+).

Each pitch will be heard by a chair and a panel of three midscale venue managers. The aim is to help promising ideas find supporters, sharpen their proposition and receive constructive feedback from people who understand the touring landscape and their local audiences.

This is for evolving ideas, not finished products. Venues with ideas to share and test are encouraged to pitch too.

Wanted: Producer Pitchers and Venue Manager Panellists.

Collaborate - you choose the topic

This strand will focus on more transparent and collaborative relationships between producers and venues, particularly around the development of new touring work.

We want to hear what you think needs discussing. What gets in the way of better collaboration? What would help venues and producers make decisions earlier, share risk more intelligently and build tours with stronger foundations? What digital solution would help you deliver or programme a touring production?

Applicants are invited to suggest topics for this strand.

Dream - think big

What would you reinvent if the room had the will to do it?

A new approach to co-production? A better touring model? Shared marketing infrastructure? New ways of building audiences? A different relationship between venues, producers and artists?

Participants will be invited to suggest bold topics in the morning. The hottest ideas will be discussed in the afternoon.

This is the space for the bigger questions: not just how we survive the current model, but how we might change it.

Marketplace - make connections

The Marketplace will run throughout the day, providing opportunities for organisations to connect with delegates between sessions.

Whether you're a producer looking to find new venues, a venue hoping to broaden your programming, a service provider with a solution for the midscale, or a sector organisation wanting to engage directly with decision-makers, the Marketplace is your opportunity to start conversations and build relationships.

Wanted: Producers, venues, suppliers, sector organisations, funders and partners who have something valuable to share with the midscale.

Live Moments - share something unforgettable

Live Moments are short performances woven throughout the day, bringing Midscale to life and giving delegates a taste of work in front of an audience.

We're looking for companies with pieces that can be easily presented with one or two performers and minimal technical requirements, helping to inspire conversations and showcase the breadth of drama, music theatre, dance and opera being made for midscale touring.

Wanted: Artists and companies with compelling live work to share.

Don't delay - apply today

If the event is oversubscribed, one of the criteria for allocating places will be the date of application submission. Get your application in early for the best chance of a place.

Selection procdure

Applications will be considered by the LTTA Board. We will first assess whether applicants meet the core eligibility criteria for Midscale. We will then consider how each application contributes to the event's objectives, including achieving a balanced mix of venues, producers, artforms, geography and participation opportunities.

Midscale is a curated marketplace rather than an open conference. Our aim is to create the most productive environment possible for everyone attending. This means we may not be able to offer places to all applicants, particularly where demand exceeds capacity or where there is significant oversubscription from a particular part of the sector.

Midscale is primarily designed for venues, producers and touring companies working in, or actively seeking to work in, the midscale. We also welcome applications from freelancers, tour bookers, funders, sector support organisations and suppliers whose work directly supports touring. As places are limited, priority will be given to achieving the right balance of organisations and ensuring that these additional participants enhance the conversations and opportunities created throughout the day.
